The Gamay grape, with its casual charm, is comfort-food in a bottle. A sip of this unpretentious, light, and bright red allows one to relax and set aside any pretension thinking, “This is Beaujolais, we’re going to have fun!” The label of Jean-Michel Dupre’s creation, with a couple of pigeons getting into a bottle and its name (translated glug, glug – a wine to “chug”), will only add to that atmosphere.

The wine itself, derived from grapes grown on high-elevation granitic soils not far from the town of Beaujolais, is produced with minimal intervention including native yeast fermentation. Freshly crushed purple berries with pomegranate accents are the main attraction with some herbs dusted on for interest. Snappy and fresh with a cleansing, dry finish, this modest Beaujolais-Villages will wash down what’s on the table with ease. Glou-Glou indeed!
